Key West News

Hey folks, If you’re looking to find out the latest, most up to date news and events happening in and around Key West and the Florida Keys, there’s no better place to find it than the daily newspaper in town, the Key West Citizen. The Citizen will keep you informed and up to date about everything from the latest news, weather, sports, business, visitor info, classifieds and much, much more written by some of the best journalists in the area.

The Citizen dates back over 125 years and is the only daily newspaper based in Monroe County since 1905. The history of the Citizen is quite lengthy and fascinating as well. I found this awesome article written by Terry Schmida, a Citizen features editor, about the history of the newspaper that I think everyone will find both interesting and informative.

Here’s the link from the article….Enjoy!!!

Oldest House

Hey folks, just wanted to give you all a heads up if any of you are planning a trip down to Key West during the May 1st through May 5th time frame. The Key West Songwriters Festival will be showcasing some of the best performing songwriters that the world has to offer and it all takes place during the first week in May at various venues all over Key West. Featuring over 100 performers appearing on over 25 different stages with over 30 different shows to offer, this music festival is a one of a kind preview of some of the best local and national musical acts that the planet has to offer over a five day and night time period. Most of the shows are free and the festival finishes up with a fabulous street concert in front of Sloppy Joe’s Bar on Duval street. Headlining this wonderfully eclectic musical lineup is X-Factor Winner Tate Stevens, whose rise from humble beginnings to national stardom is a story that will inspire everyone who witnesses the pure passion he has for his craft and his soulful, down to earth, heartfelt vocals will surely impress all the live music fans in the audience.

Click on the link above for more information as it pertains to all of the specific details regarding this event. The shows will take place at many of Key West’s most popular watering holes around town and I’m sure that you will find a few that are convenient and that fit into your vacation schedule. This is truly a collection of talented artists that should not be missed… Enjoy!!

If you’re planning a trip to Historic Key West anytime soon, a must see attraction is the oldest house in Key West.

Key West’s Oldest House Museum and Gardens (305-294-9501)

Located at 322 Duval St, right in the heart of Old Town, you’ll find this charming, wonderfully historic property. The Oldest House in Key West is free and open to the public daily from 10am till 4pm except Wednesdays and Sundays when they’re closed. The museum has staff on hand to answer any questions and inform guests of the history of the house and the family who lived there. “Casey” did a marvelous job explaining the amazing details and was extremely helpful and very friendly. It was a great pleasure talking with him.

This historic property is also available for private functions including, weddings, birthdays and anniversaries, as well as for companies and organizations. The private gardens can accommodate up to 125 seated diners or up to 300 people for cocktail parties. The gardens offer a beautifully manicured lawn, gazebo, quaint brick pathways and a gorgeous tropical foliage for your enjoyment. There’s also an original “Cook House” from the era that is simply incredible. The house was built on Whitehead Street and the moved to this location around 1836. It’s really well worth the time to stop in to this wonderfully historic landmark when you’re in Key West. I would consider it a must-do!

Spam All-Stars

For those of you lucky enough to be in Key West over the upcoming weekend, I highly recommend stopping into the Green Parrot  to check out the Spam All-Stars, out of the Miami area, who are one of the hottest bands you’ll see anywhere on the planet and who always bring the crowd to its feet. Spam All-Stars will be performing at the “Parrot”  for two shows beginning Friday February 22nd at 5:30pm for “Sound Check” and a late night show at 10:00pm, and on Saturday the 23rd for a 10:00pm show. Their eclectic style of hip-hop, funk, and Latin fused music is the driving force that has the crowd dancing in the aisles night after night and the musicianship of the band is unparalleled, in my opinion. They have five independent record releases including the Latin Grammy nominated “Fuacata Live” released in 2002, as well as four others featuring the band. This 10 piece group never fails to amaze the audience with their special brand of music and you too will see why you should know that the Green Parrot continuously offers the best live music anywhere in the Florida Keys. Don’t miss it!

Fantasy Fest

Fantasy Fest

Hey friends, Fantasy Fest is in full swing now and there’s still time to get down there for the weekend festivities. With a full schedule of events leading up to the parade still to come, now is a good time to make your weekend plans. I just spoke to Renee at Key West Express and it looks like they’re not going to be running tomorrow and it’s doubtful that they are going to run on Saturday either because of rough weather in the Gulf from Hurricane Sandy. That doesn’t mean you can’t hop in the car of find a flight though.

By the way, Fantasy Fest is NOT cancelled due to the weather as many people have rumored. So just do it! I’ve added the link to the official website for Fantasy Fest 2012. Check it out for a full schedule of events. Have Fun!

Everyone should party responsilbly. Here’s the “Code of Conduct” page to see what’s legal and what’s not. You don’t want to end up in the klink so it’s worth checking out.
